Amateur Radio has been a lifetime fascination for me, as a child I have always had a strong want for adventure and a desire to explore. Amateur Radio provided me with this alternative. Its very difficult for a child the age of 9 to explore the world on my own to see the wonders of the world, so an alternative way to accomplish this was with Amateur Radio.

Amateur Radio would fill that desire, provide me with the opportunity to get first hand accounts and in a way actually place myself where I made contact in the world. This was my way of travelling the world on a mysterious invisible wave, like magic. My curiosity would motivate me to research the locations I contacted through books. Yes, books and not the internet, that was still about 20 years away.

I was licensed at the age of 10 and held a reciprocal German license of Dl0abb and an American license of Ka2qej. At the height of my radio activity I was living with my grandparents in Mannheim Germany. My grandparents were very supportive of my radio passion and supported me the best they could.

I am in my early 50’s now and I have had power house QRO stations with huge arrays and dabbled a bit with QRP. I have hundreds of countries confirmed on HF and still have the sense of adventure and excitement when I contact a DX station, even ones I have contacted a dozen times before.

Have you ever thought there is even the chance of extra terrestrial contact, as HAMS I like to think we are very technical and open minded to variations and possibilities of origin. With the overwhelming amount of ET evidence do you think its possible for ET’s to be listening to our HF, EME, SAT and simplex QSO’s and still searching for intelligent life on earth? That’s some tongue and cheek, I have heard things on HF that could give the impression to intelligent life, we are still single celled organisms.

Be Kind, have Understanding not ignorance or judgement and project peace and goodwill. You never know who is listening.
